AIOLIA offered an online training workshop on Assessing Research Protocols Involving Artificial Intelligence: Guidance for Research Ethics Committees for members of the Bioethics Society of the English-speaking Caribbean (BSEC) and the Caribbean Network of Research Ethics Committees (CANREC). The 3-hour workshop on September 14, 2026, was facilitated by AIOLIA researchers from CEA (Alexei Grinbaum, Alexandra Prégent and Etienne Aucouturier). There were 21 participants comprising members of Research Ethics Committees at universities and health authorities in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Participants agreed that the main objective of the workshop was achieved in that they were given good exposure to AI ethics frameworks and principles. At the end, they were also able to identify the critical ethical concerns in health- and social sciences-related AI issues as well as to apply AIOLIA’s portfolio of measures to assess them.
Participants indicated that they learned a lot and intended to use the portfolio of measures to guide their work in their respective Research Ethics Committees. They also enjoyed the workshop format that included an Introduction during which Dr Grinbaum shared examples of social and ethical issues related to AI applications in health care and social settings. The participants were then engaged in an interactive session using mock exercises that reflected common but challenging situations related to the use of AI.
BSEC looks forward to future collaborations with the AIOLIA project as it continues its drive to build ethics capacity in the Caribbean.
